If you’ll be in the area of Raleigh, North Carolina, on May 17, be sure to check out the “Taking Control of Your Diabetes Conference & Health Fair” taking place at the Raleigh Convention Center.

Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) is a nonprofit organization founded by endocrinologist Steven Edelman, who himself has Type 1 diabetes, in 1995 to “educate and motivate people with diabetes to take a more active role in their condition.” The group has a number of initiatives, including its online reality series Extreme Diabetes Makeover, its cable-based television series featuring Dr. Edelman, and its national conferences and health fairs.

These conventions feature lectures from well-known speakers, health screenings, exhibits from diabetes-related companies and organizations, a healthful banquet lunch, and the opportunity to speak with diabetes health-care specialists.

The Raleigh conference has both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes programs. The Type 1 program includes presentations on topics such as “CGM Devices: Revolutionizing Diabetes Care,” “What Else You Got? Other Medications for Type 1 Besides Insulin,” and “Envisioning a World Without Type 1 Diabetes: Progress in Preventing, Reversing, and Treating the Disease.” The Type 2 program includes presentations on topics including “An Explosion of Type 2 Treatment Options,” “Meter Readings: High, Low…Now What?” and “Insulin for Type 2s: Friend or Foe…You Need to Know!”

The registration fee is $20 per person ($15 per person for two or more registering together) through 12 PM PST on May 14. Registrations sent through the mail must be postmarked by Friday, May 9. The onsite registration fee is $25 per person. To register, call (800) 998-2693, visit www.tcoyd.org, or send the registration form available here to Taking Control of Your Diabetes, 1110 Camino Del Mar, Suite B, Del Mar, CA 92014.
