"EveryDay Steps" Walking Guide Launched to Help People With Type 2 Diabetes

If you have Type 2 diabetes, you know that regular physical activity — along with a healthful diet, checking your blood sugar levels, and taking your medicines as prescribed — is key to managing your condition. But incorporating exercise into your daily routine can be easier said than done. That’s why pharmaceutical manufacturer AstraZeneca and the Diabetes Hands Foundation have partnered to form Everyday Steps, a campaign designed to help people with Type 2 diabetes “develop and maintain a walking routine — one step at a time.”

The program includes a variety of tips to successfully create a walking regimen, including setting goals and tracking your progress, making a song list on your smartphone or MP3 player to energize you during walking, and rewarding yourself with something healthy after each walk.

“How exercise helps improve diabetes management is a popular topic in our online forum, especially among adults living with Type 2,” says community manager Cynthia Rogers. “But many find it difficult to know how to start and keep the exercise habit going. The EveryDay Steps guide provides a lot of useful information about how to individualize a walking routine so that it fits a person’s preferences and lifestyle. And that’s key for long-term success.”
