Riding on Insulin Mountain Bike Camps

The warm summer weather has arrived, and many people are looking for fun in the sun. If you have a child with Type 1 diabetes who loves to mountain bike — or wants to try his or her hand at the sport — you may be interested in learning more about various Riding on Insulin camps taking place across the United States in the coming months.

Riding on Insulin was founded by professional backcountry snowboarder Sean Busby, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes while training for the 2010 Olympics. Inspired by stories from JDRF’s Children’s Congress, he founded the nonprofit organization, which hosts ski, snowboard, and mountain bike camps around the world for children ages 7 to 17 who are living with Type 1, as well as their siblings and friends.

The camps are open to children of all ability levels and help them learn how to manage their blood sugar while trying a new sport (or enhancing their existing skills) with others who are just like them. This year’s camps will be taking place in Philadelphia, PA, on July 15, Cambridge, WI, on August 5, and Whitefish, MT, on August 12. The price for those bringing their own bike is $50 and for those renting a bike is $75 to $85 (depending on location). Registration includes a Riding on Insulin t-shirt, lunch for the participant, snacks throughout the day, all-day mountain biking instruction and supervision, and parent participation in an optional networking session. Scholarships and fundraising opportunities are available.

For more information about the camps, including answers to frequently asked questions, details from the different camp locations, a sample camp schedule, and a list of upcoming events, see the Riding on Insulin website.
