"Taking Control of Your Diabetes" Health Fair Coming to Honolulu

If you live near Honolulu, Hawaii, you’ll want to check out the “Taking Control of Your Diabetes Conference & Health Fair” taking place on Saturday, April 30, at the Hawaii Convention Center.

Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) is a nonprofit organization founded by Steven Edelman, an endocrinologist with Type 1 diabetes, in 1995 to “educate and motivate people with diabetes to take a more active role in their condition.” The group has a number of initiatives, including its online reality series Extreme Diabetes Makeover; its weekly video series, “The Edelman Report”; and its national conferences and health fairs.

The conventions feature lectures from well-known speakers, health screenings, the opportunity to speak with diabetes specialists, exhibits from diabetes-related companies and organizations, and a healthful banquet lunch.

The Honolulu conference has both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes tracks. The Type 1 program includes presentations on topics such as “True Detectives: Solving Real-Life Case Scenarios of Highs and Lows,” “Oh My Aching Joints: Musculoskeletal Issues in Diabetes,” and “Therapies and Treatments Other Than Insulin.” The Type 2 program includes presentations on topics such as “Do You Know Your ABCs? A1C, Blood Pressure, and Cholesterol,” “An In-Depth Look at Type 2 Treatments, Including Insulin,” and “Fun Foot Facts and the Latest on Neuropathy.”

The registration fee is $15 per person ($10 per person for two or more registering together) through 12 PM PST on April 27. The onsite registration fee is $20 per person. To register, call (800) 998-2693 or (858) 755-5683, visit, or send the registration form available here to Taking Control of Your Diabetes, 1110 Camino Del Mar, Suite B, Del Mar, CA 92014.
