If you live near San Antonio, Texas, then be sure to check out the “Taking Control of Your Diabetes Conference & Health Fair” taking place on Saturday, June 18, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) is a nonprofit organization founded by Steven Edelman, an endocrinologist with Type 1 diabetes, in 1995 to “educate and motivate people with diabetes to take a more active role in their condition.” The group has a number of initiatives, including its online reality series Extreme Diabetes Makeover; its weekly video series, “The Edelman Report”; and its national conferences and health fairs.
These conventions feature lectures from well-known speakers, health screenings, exhibits from diabetes-related companies and organizations, a healthful banquet lunch, and the opportunity to speak with diabetes specialists.
The San Antonio conference has both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes tracks. The Type 1 program includes presentations on topics such as “True Detectives: Solving real Life Case Scenarios of Highs and Lows,” “Detecting and Treating Hypoglycemia,” and “Other Treatments for Type 1 Besides Insulin.” The Type 2 program includes presentations on topics such as “”Getting Enough Zs? Sleep Apnea,” “Fun Foot Facts and the Latest on Neuropathy,” and “An In-Depth Look at Type 2 Treatments, Including Insulin.”
