Trial on Low-Carb Approach to Diabetes and Prediabetes Now Enrolling

If you are an adult with Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes who is overweight or obese, you may be interested in a study that is currently recruiting participants to evaluate the effects of a low-carbohydrate diet on blood sugar levels and weight.

The trial aims to determine the effectiveness of low-carbohydrate nutrition for reversing or improving Type 2 diabetes without the use of medicines and for preventing the progression of prediabetes. Study subjects will be assigned to one of two treatment options. The first set of participants will be treated in the Indiana-based office as part of a group, meeting weekly for three months, every other week for three months, monthly for the next six months, and every three months for the final year of the study. The second group will receive the same treatment instructions online, an ideal setup for those who have time conflicts with the group sessions.

Eligible participants are either willing to drive to Lafayette, Indiana, on a weekly basis or have high-speed Internet or smartphone access; are between the ages of 21 and 64; have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes; have had an HbA1c level of 5.6% or above in the last six months; and are overweight or obese.

Participants will receive a $50 discount on the usual $125 entry fee for the program and will additionally receive a $100 reimbursement for each year completed in the program, up to $200 for the two-year period. Four free dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans to evaluate bone density and fat mass and one free carotid ultrasound screening to check arteries for plaque buildup will also be included.
