Beyond Type 1, a nonprofit organization co-founded by performer Nick Jonas, who is living with Type 1 diabetes, recently announced grants to two diabetes initiatives.

Founded in 2015 by Jonas, Juliet de Baubigny, Sarah Lucas, and chef Sam Talbot, Beyond Type 1 aims to “change the conversation around diabetes” through advocacy and education and by raising funds for research to find a cure.

The organization recently selected documentary The Wind River Project and nonprofit sports group Riding on Insulin to receive grants.

Most recently screened at the Flagstaff Film Festival, The Wind River Project is an 11-minute short film chronicling the experience of three climbers with Type 1 diabetes as they ascend the Titcomb Basin in the Wind River Range of Wyoming. The film records their struggles and victories during the climb and spotlights the extra considerations and preparations necessitated by diabetes. The grant from Beyond Type 1 assisted with production and final completion of the film.

Riding on Insulin was founded by professional backcountry snowboarder Sean Busby, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes while training for the 2010 Olympics. The nonprofit organization hosts ski and snowboard camps around the world for children ages 7–17 who are living with Type 1 diabetes, along with their siblings. The $20,000 grant from Beyond Type 1 sponsored the group’s one-day camp held on March 4 in Lake Tahoe, California.

According to Sarah Lucas, CEO and co-founder of Beyond Type 1, “Our current portfolio includes 11 grants and 32 programs impacting three key areas: education, advocacy, cure. We look for opportunities that maximize our investments and have the greatest [impact] for the Type 1 community.”
